Why Thunderbird? To begin with, it's easy to install and use, it's open source and free of charge and it's cross-platform (Windows, Mac, Linux, ...). The built-in spam filtering, spell checker and ability to prevent automatic execution of viruses and worms are some of the most popular reasons for making the switch.
